The Skin I’m In Essay

Sharon G Flake’s “The Skin I’m In” takes place mainly at McClenton Middle School. McClenton is where the main character, Maleeka, attends and also where she gets bullied a lot. People would make fun of her for her smarts and the fact that teachers like her. But they would make fun of her mainly for her looks. When new teacher, Mrs. Saunders, comes to sight with a discolored blotch on her face, Maleeka notices that Mrs. Saunders loves herself and begins to try to do the same.

In the beginning of the book, Maleeka explains that she gets bullied a lot by the same people about the same things. Her peers would make fun of her for her good grades and how smart she is. But they’d also make fun of her for her looks. They’d make fun of her hair, her homemade clothes, and her dark skin. She explains that she became insecure after her father’s death and her mom began sewing clothes that weren’t good. She began to ‘hang out’ with a girl named Charlese. Charlese was mean to Maleeka but she agreed to give her “good clothes” if she did her homework. After she meets her new teacher, Mrs. Saunders, Maleeka notices that she loves herself despite the discolored blotch over half of her face.

Throughout the book, Maleeka begins to stand up for herself and she also begins to try loving herself. But in the middle of the story, Maleeka gets attacked. Two boys on the street began harassing her on her way home, calling her “black bean”.  When she gets home she tells Sweets not to tell anybody. Maleeka stops eating regularly and continues playing along with Char.

A while after the attack, Maleeka starts to be more confident in herself and begins dating Caleb again. She changes her attitude and the way she speaks. She also defends herself against Char. She’s no longer friends with Char, Raina and Raise.  Maleeka begins to love herself. She says that she is proud of who she is and that she has value.

Some people would say that the theme or lesson of this book is to be confident and to love yourself the way you are. Others would say that it’s to treat people with respect. An example for the first one is that how Maleeka used to be insecure and she didn’t love herself. She was shy and quiet. She begins to develop more confidence and she starts to defend herself. The second one is an example of how Char, John-John and her other peers would treat her. They’d insult her about her smarts and looks, bringing down her confidence.  A lot of people would say that both of those ideas are good themes for this book. Personally, I think so too.

What is Bullying?

BULLYING

Bullying. What is bullying? Well, so far the best explanation that people have ever given is calling names or pushing people around. Anything for that matter. But the simplest definition for bullying is repeated harassment. What is repeated harassment? Constantly calling someone names. Constantly pushing someone around. Constantly hurting someone. Key word: constantly. Constantly as in more than once. Over and over. Bullying can go on for days, weeks, months or possibly even years. Students get bullied all over the world. Whether it’s at school or even at home. It has caused things like anxiety, depression, etc. Someone who is getting bullied would be anxious to come to school because they don’t want to be harassed by the same person or people. They wouldn’t want to tell anyone like their parents or teachers in fear of being called a snitch or even of the bullying getting worse. Sometimes, out of anger or sadness, the person who is being bullied will say or do something bad back to the person or to other people who have nothing to do with the bullying.

Bystanders

There are many factors that keep bullying from being stopped. One of those factors are bystanders. Bystanders are people who witness the bullying and don’t do anything. These people don’t do anything in fear of being bullied themselves. By not doing anything, like reporting the bullying, that makes the bully or bullies think they have the freedom and/or power to continue bullying.

Cyberbullying

Another issue is cyberbullying. Again, it’s repeated harassment, but this time it’s online. On social media. Things like Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat. It can start with a post or a comment and/or text. Sometimes these things can’t be deleted and can be used as proof of bullying. Kids can show their parents and report the bullying to their school and find the person who has been harassing them. But a lot of times, this isn’t the case. Kids can be scared of telling teachers or parents, again, in fear of being called a snitch, or the bullying getting worse, or even nothing being done about it. Fear of it being seen as “not a big deal”. Sometimes the victim would comment something bad back to the bully or bullies, making things worse for themselves.

In Conclusion

In conclusion, bullying is wrong. It hurts people’s feelings. It’s something that should be stopped if seen or heard. So you see someone getting bullied, try stopping it.

I am a reader

The book I’m reading is The Death Cure by James Dashner. What I love about this book is the suspicion and how descriptive it is. Especially about the main character, Thomas. The author explains how Thomas looks and feels. I’m only at the very beginning of the book, but it has already explains so much. The author explains how Thomas is locked up and alone and how he’s going crazy. But only because of his own bodily odor. He gets fed somewhat plenty, but the food is unhealthy. He’s separated from all of his fellow Glader friends, whom he thinks about every second of each day. He already knows that WICKED can’t be trusted.  He has remembered much more than WICKED thought he has. For Thomas, that is enough to know that they can’t be trusted in any way. They put him in the Maze. They left him and his friends to die in the Scorch and then separated them. Why should he trust them?
